At a busy tram stop along Beckhausstraße in Bielefeld, the City of Bielefeld partnered with smartmicro to further develop traffic signal control at a complex urban location. With motorized traffic, bicycle traffic, and public transport converging in a confined space, the project aimed to create a reliable and scalable detection basis for more efficient traffic management.
The installation of four TOPGRD radar sensors in combination with two COM HUB Relay 8 devices now enables:
- Reliable detection of motorized traffic and bicycle traffic across multiple lanes
- Large-area coverage supporting flexible configuration of detection zones
- Direct integration of detection data into the existing traffic signal control system
- Non-intrusive installation using existing infrastructure, without disruptive roadworks
- Stable performance independent of weather and lighting conditions
Installed within approximately four hours and with only minimal impact on ongoing traffic, the solution demonstrates how radar-based smart intersection technology can help cities manage complex traffic environments more effectively.
