Enhancing Urban Mobility: How Shymkent Transformed Traffic Management with an Intelligent Transport System

In 2024, the city of Shymkent, Kazakhstan, embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to modernize its traffic management through the implementation of an Intelligent Transport System (ITS). Faced with increasing traffic congestion and an urgent need for efficient flow management, the city sought innovative solutions to tackle these challenges. The sensors were installed by SMEU Astana, which is a leading infrastructure development company in Kazakhstan. Since its establishment in 2003, their team has been using the latest technologies to develop traffic control facilities in several cities across the country.

The Challenge

Shymkent's growing population and urban development resulted in heightened traffic demands, leading to congestion and inefficient traffic management at key intersections. The city required a sophisticated system that could monitor traffic patterns in real-time, efficiently manage vehicle flow, and respond to incidents, thereby improving safety and accessibility for all road users.

The Solution

To address these challenges, Shymkent partnered with smartmicro, a leader in innovative traffic management solutions, to develop a comprehensive ITS. The system integrated multiple sensor technologies and sophisticated software capabilities. Key components of the solution included:

  • Deployment of 213 UMRR-11 Type 132 sensors provided by smartmicro in 2024 serve various functionalities, including Stop Bar detection, queue length estimation, vehicle counting, and incident management. These advanced sensors are known for their accuracy and reliability in identifying traffic patterns. SMUE purchased 213 radars, 207 of which were installed on traffic light objects in Shymkent (6 sensors were ordered as spare)
  • In 2025, SMEU did purchase another 68 radars
  • Integration of smartmicro sensors with existing traffic controllers, enabling seamless operation and enhanced responsiveness to changing traffic conditions.
  • A delivery package that included CRO boards, a J-Box, and straight brackets, facilitating easy installation and setup while ensuring the technology fits the city's existing infrastructure.

The implementation process was carried out in phases, starting with a proof of concept in 2023. This was followed by the delivery of most sensors in 2024. This systematic approach ensured that the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) was both effective and compatible with existing infrastructure. At smartmicro, we are dedicated to ensuring that our technology is not only efficient but also seamlessly integrates with what is already in place. Our commitment to facilitating convenient installation reflects our goal of providing solutions that meet your needs.

By the end of 2024, the ITS is expected to cover 244 intersections in Shymkent, significantly improving traffic flow, reducing congestion, and enhancing road safety. The system's real-time data capabilities enable central monitoring and automatic adjustments to traffic signals based on current road conditions, providing a more balanced and efficient travel experience for everyone. The precision of smartmicro sensors allows for accurate vehicle counting and flow management, leading to timely responses to congestion and accidents.

Additionally, emergency response times are improved, as city services can quickly address traffic disruptions or malfunctions using the data provided by smartmicro's sensors. The phased implementation of the ITS, bolstered by smartmicro's technology, will ultimately ensure better traffic conditions for residents of Shymkent, making the transport network more uniform and safer.

The Conclusion

The Intelligent Transport System in Shymkent demonstrates the impact of innovative technology, particularly through smartmicro's products, in improving urban mobility. By effectively integrating advanced sensor technology with a comprehensive traffic management strategy, Shymkent aims to address current congestion issues while laying the groundwork for future growth and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. Overall, smartmicro's role in this transformation highlights the importance of collaboration between technology providers and urban planners in creating smarter and safer cities.
