In our Faces of smartmicro series, we introduce colleagues from around the globe, giving insights into their roles, experiences, and personal stories. This time, we sat down with Abdalla Gomaa, our ITS Support Engineer for the Middle East.
Could you share a bit about your background and what led you to join smartmicro?
With six years of experience in the ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) field, my career began as a Traffic Signal Engineer with the Royal Commission for Al Jubail, a position I held for three years. I was subsequently promoted to ITS Engineer in the Traffic Management Center. My journey to smartmicro began in a unique way. I consistently shared my insights and knowledge of ITS concepts on LinkedIn, creating a personal reference library of posts. This practice caught the attention of Ralph, who reached out and offered me my current position.
What does your role as ITS Support Engineer in the Middle East involve on a day-to-day basis?
My role is centered on both strengthening existing client relationships and forging new ones. My day-to-day work involves two primary functions:
- Business Development: I am responsible for proactively identifying and establishing new business connections to expand our customer base. This includes seeking out potential clients, presenting our ITS solutions, and negotiating contracts to secure new projects. The goal is to grow the company's presence and market share.
- Customer Support & Training: I ensure the full functionality and reliability of our products and services for our current customers. This involves providing high-level support, troubleshooting any issues, and managing the overall satisfaction of our clients. A crucial part of this is training new customers on how to effectively use our solutions and products, ensuring a smooth and successful implementation. My ultimate goal is to build strong, lasting relationships by providing exceptional support and continuous value.
What do you enjoy most about working with smartmicro radar technology?
One of the things I enjoy most about working with smartmicro radar technology is the strong sense of collaboration and community within the company. It truly feels like working with a family, where everyone is dedicated to the same goals. This environment fosters a high degree of trust and open communication, which is essential for developing and implementing complex technical solutions.
What are some unique challenges or opportunities you see in ITS projects in the Middle East?
One of the most unique aspects of working on ITS projects in the Middle East is navigating the blend of traditional culture with rapid technological advancement. The people here have been shaped by a challenging desert environment and tough weather, which has forged a deep sense of resilience and strong personal character. While this can sometimes be a challenge to navigate in a business context, it is balanced by the remarkable generosity and kindness that is a cornerstone of the culture.
From your perspective, how do smartmicro solutions make a difference for cities and traffic operators in your region?
From my perspective, smartmicro solutions make a significant difference for cities and traffic operators in the Middle East by addressing key challenges with advanced technology. Our radar technology offers ultra-high definition and multi-lane, multi-object detection, which provides a level of accuracy and reliability that is crucial for managing heavy traffic and diverse road users, including vulnerable ones like pedestrians and cyclists.
How does it feel to work closely with colleagues across different regions and time zones?
Working with colleagues across different regions and time zones is a dynamic and rewarding experience. While it presents challenges, such as scheduling meetings and ensuring clear communication across geographical distances, it also offers a unique opportunity for professional and personal growth. The primary benefit is the exposure to a diverse range of perspectives and expertise. Each region brings its own unique insights, problem-solving approaches, and market knowledge, which enriches our collective work.
What’s one thing that stands out to you about the smartmicro team or company culture?
One thing that truly stands out to me about the smartmicro team and company culture is the pervasive spirit of innovation and collaboration. It's an environment where new ideas are not just welcomed, but actively encouraged, and where every team member is empowered to contribute to the company's growth.
What inspires or motivates you outside of work?
Outside of work, what truly inspires and motivates me is my family, especially my son. They are at the heart of all my plans and aspirations. Knowing that my efforts contribute to their happiness and well-being gives me a profound sense of purpose. Beyond that, I am motivated by the desire to constantly learn and grow. Whether it's through reading, exploring new technologies, or simply experiencing new places, I believe that personal growth is a lifelong journey.
Do you have hobbies or activities you enjoy in your free time that help you recharge?
In my free time, I really enjoy fishing and reading. Fishing is a great way for me to disconnect and enjoy nature. There's something very peaceful about being out on the water, and it's a perfect way to clear my head. Reading also helps me recharge; it allows me to explore new ideas and get lost in different worlds, which is a great way to relax and learn at the same time.
Thank you, Abdalla, for sharing your journey and insights with us! We are excited to see the impact you will continue to make in the Middle East and are proud to have you as part of the smartmicro team.
