Exploring Radar for Multi-Lane Traffic Monitoring on Belgian Motorways

Look into a recent Installation in Belgium.

We partnered with Equans to test a highway traffic monitoring Proof of Concept near Antwerp, Belgium.

A smartmicro UMRR-11 Type 132 radar sensor was installed on a highway gantry to monitor four motorway lanes towards Antwerp.

The objective was to evaluate radar-based traffic counting and vehicle classification as a scalable alternative to the inductive loop detectors currently in use at the site.

The radar sensor was connected via Moxa NPort for data communication, enabling lane-specific traffic data streaming without the need for intrusive road works.

With smartmicro forward-firing radar technology, the system measures range, speed, and azimuth angle for every detected vehicle. This enables reliable lane assignment, accurate counting, and precise classification across multiple lanes from a single installation point.

Compared to loop-based systems, radar sensors provide significant advantages for highway monitoring:

  • Non-intrusive installation on existing gantries
  • Multi-lane coverage from a single sensor
  • Lane-specific counting and classification data
  • Reduced maintenance, since no pavement work is required

The Proof of Concept demonstrates how radar-based detection supports advanced highway traffic monitoring and high-quality data collection.
