Radar Detection Supports Adaptive Traffic Management Near a Major Theme Park in the Southeastern United States
A major theme park destination in the southeastern United States attracts substantial numbers of visitors and generates highly dynamic traffic conditions on the surrounding road network. Strong arrival and departure peaks, changing traffic volumes, and complex turning movements make adaptive traffic management essential for maintaining efficient access to the destination.
To improve traffic flow along a key access corridor serving the theme park, the responsible road authority implemented an adaptive traffic signal control system across multiple interconnected intersections. Reliable, real-time vehicle detection was required to continuously adjust signal timing according to actual traffic demand.
smartmicro supplied the radar detection infrastructure supporting the adaptive system.
The Challenge
Traffic patterns around a major theme park differ significantly from those on a typical urban corridor. Demand changes throughout the day, with concentrated arrival periods, sustained daytime traffic, and strong departure peaks. High volumes of turning vehicles place additional demands on intersections serving entrances, parking facilities, hotels, and other nearby destinations.
The project required a detection solution capable of:
- Providing reliable, real-time vehicle data for adaptive signal control
- Coordinating traffic flow across multiple interconnected intersections
- Detecting vehicles sufficiently early on selected approaches
- Supporting safe and efficient left-turn operations
- Maintaining traffic progression along a busy theme park access corridor
During implementation, smartmicro reviewed the available installation documentation and identified several elements requiring adjustment. Verifying sensor locations and mounting conditions before commissioning was important for supporting reliable detection and reducing the risk of later installation or maintenance issues.
Additional configuration and software adjustments were completed during deployment to optimize overall system performance.
The Solution
smartmicro delivered a comprehensive radar detection solution comprising:
- More than 25 TRUGRD Stream radar sensors
- Multiple COM HUB units
- SDLC communication modules integrated with the existing traffic signal controllers
The number and positioning of the sensors were individually adapted to the geometry and detection requirements of each intersection.
At selected approaches, additional radar sensors were installed for advanced detection. By detecting approaching vehicles farther upstream, these sensors provide the adaptive signal control system with more time to respond to changing traffic demand.
smartmicro’s involvement extended beyond supplying the hardware and included:
- Reviewing radar placement and mounting conditions at every intersection
- Updating installation information before commissioning
- Providing on-site installation support
- Training the responsible project teams
- Programming, configuring, and testing the detection system
- Supporting commissioning throughout the corridor
This detailed verification and commissioning process helped establish a reliable detection foundation for the adaptive traffic management system.
Results and Benefits
Today, smartmicro radar technology provides the real-time vehicle detection required for adaptive signal control along this important theme park access corridor.
Live detection data enables signal timing to respond continuously to changing traffic volumes. This supports smoother traffic progression toward and away from the destination while improving intersection operation for visitors, employees, local traffic, and other road users.
The project demonstrates how radar-based detection can support road authorities in managing the distinctive traffic patterns created by major entertainment and visitor destinations.
