The future is now: Smart Highways

Check how the advanced technology can improve your highway

In the early 90’s in the US teams of leading transport managers and engineers were asked to design highways for the future... the rest is history.

As shared by Highways DOT, the Automated Highway System (AHS) program, stepped up in response to the mandate of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA). Their goal was to "develop an automated highway and vehicle prototype from which future fully automated intelligent vehicle-highway systems can be developed," which will provide the vision and technology to make highway driving efficient, safe, and predictable.

Companies developed initial technologies such as in-road loop detection that simply detected the presence of traffic. Fast forward 30 years, and technology, such as radar + vision is becoming widely adopted in many countries. smartmicro has been established for over 26 years and, over that time, developed some of the most advanced detection technology, improving highways all over the world.
