Radar-Based Traffic Detection in Midwolda, Netherlands

On October 5–6, a new detection system was installed and commissioned at the Midwolda intersection, replacing the existing eight thermal sensors and two inductive loops with four TOPGRD radar sensors and one COM HUB Relay 24. The system is connected to a SWARCO traffic light controller and has been operating exclusively on radar detection since October 6th.

This installation continues our cooperation with the Province of Groningen, following previous radar detection projects at the Ruischerbrug and Slaperstil intersections. Together, these projects demonstrate how existing traffic detection infrastructure can be modernized with flexible, above-ground radar technology.

Want to learn more about radar detection in practice?
On November 26th, our colleague Robin Collaert will be speaking at Vakbeurs Mobiliteit in Houten, Netherlands. His presentation will explore the transition from traditional loop-based detection toward continuous traffic awareness, including practical insights from the Midwolda project.
