Intelligent Incident Detection System in Taipei, Taiwan
How can traffic operators identify potentially dangerous situations across several kilometers of busy urban expressways?
In Taipei, smartmicro radar technology is part of an Intelligent Incident Detection System designed to monitor traffic activity and detect unusual events along elevated urban roads. The project documentation describes a 6.4 km corridor equipped with 30 smartmicro TRUGRD radar sensors and 30 PTZ cameras with 40x optical zoom, providing extensive monitoring coverage in both directions.
The system goes beyond conventional vehicle detection by monitoring traffic behavior and identifying almost real time incidents, including unexpectedly stopped vehicles, roadworks, traffic accidents, and speed-related events. With configurable virtual detection zones and event thresholds, the monitoring system can be adapted to specific lanes and road sections, helping distinguish critical situations from normal traffic activity and reducing unnecessary alerts. This system helps to reduce the accident reaction time down to 13 seconds, which is critical to save lives during severe accidents.
An important aspect of the installation is the combination of radar-centric event triggering over 260m and camera-enhanced AI Deep-Learning and classifying of traffic events. While the radar sensors provide continuous information about vehicle movements, the PTZ cameras support visual observation and enable closer examination of traffic situations and differentiate traffic event. Together, these technologies combined provide valuable information for traffic operators to assess incidents and respond more effectively. Compared to pure camera-based IDS Incident Detection System, this new radar/camera IDS features much longer coverage and working under all lighting and weather conditions.
Projects like this demonstrate how smartmicro radar technology can contribute to intelligent incident detection and more responsive traffic management across complex urban road networks.
