In-Cabin Automotive Radar – smartmicro’s life-saving feature

According to US DOT, on average, 38 children in America die each year due to heatstroke, after being left alone in a hot vehicle. Even at a moderate outside temperature of 20°C, a vehicle’s cabin can heat up to over 46°C. A body temperature of about 41°C is lethal.

The new smartmicro-designed ultra-short-range radar features advanced Child Presence Detection, designed to increase the safety of the most vulnerable car passengers – small children. The 60GHz sensor, developed specifically for our customer, installed invisibly at the vehicle’s ceiling, detects movements, and classifies those such as heartbeat and/or breathing of a child inside the car. The real-time detection identifies a child left behind – and sends the vehicle a signal to trigger an alarm.

Unlike the common occupancy sensor mats integrated in car seats, the smartmicro-designed sensor detects presence and movement in the entire vehicle cabin. This way, thanks to a wide field of detection, infants are detected even if located in the vehicle’s footwells or if hidden under a blanket.
