How Radar Sensors are helping VRU’s move safely through the City

Current conversations around Mobility in Europe once again highlight the importance of making streets safer and more inclusive for drivers and everyone who uses them.

At smartmicro, we’ve been working on that goal for years. One example: an intersection in Braunschweig, where our radar sensors were installed some time ago to detect and protect bicycles, no push-button required automatically.

Smart traffic management for safety.

The Challenge

Cyclists often face long waits or need to press buttons to trigger a green light. That’s not only inconvenient, but can also be unsafe, especially when traffic signals aren’t designed with their needs in mind. Traditional systems rely on push-buttons or underground induction loops, which have drawbacks. Push-buttons require manual action, which is not inclusive for all users, while loops involve disruptive roadworks and limited flexibility.

The Solution: Bike Detection with Radar

Radar sensors offer a smarter alternative. We equipped an intersection in Braunschweig (Ringgleis) with smartmicro sensors that:

    • Automatically detect approaching bicycles, no button press required
    • Prioritize cyclists by triggering or extending green phases
    • Operate reliably in all weather, day and night
    • Protect privacy by using non-imaging radar technology

The Benefits

    • Safety Cyclists can safely cross, with reduced risk of red-light violations or unsafe maneuvers
    • Comfort Shorter waiting times make cycling a more attractive and convenient option
    • Sustainability Encouraging cycling helps cut emissions and noise pollution
    • Scalability Radar sensors can be added to existing infrastructure, offering cities a cost-efficient way to improve their traffic systems

As cities continue to rethink how space and signals are shared, minor upgrades like these can make a big difference. Better detection means better decisions at the intersection, whether cycling, walking, or driving.
