Another field update from Poland

Together with our partner Viaoptima, smartmicro radar technology was recently used for a tram detection application following renovation work on a tram line. 🚈

Previously, tram detection at the site was handled by induction loops. After the line renovation, a new non-intrusive detection solution was needed, without reinstalling loops in the road surface.

The main challenge: reliable tram detection in a mixed traffic environment.

While one approach is used only by trams, the other approach includes a tram line with a car lane close beside it. In some situations, cars may also move on the tram line, making object classification essential.
Using smartmicro sensors, the system can distinguish between cars and trams and detect only the relevant tram movements for the application.

A practical example of how above-ground radar detection can support modern traffic management, especially when existing in-road infrastructure is no longer available or no longer the preferred solution.
